Nacimiento

Nació en Inglaterra el 19 de abril de 1767, hijo de Benjamin Haworth del Pasillo de Haworth.

Estudios

Fue educado por tutores y condujo hacia una carrera en la ley, pero tenía poco interés por el derecho y a los 21 años, puede consagrarse a su verdadero amor, la historia natural. Después de heredar la finca de sus padres, dedicó todo su tiempo a la historia natural.

Actividades

Participa en la actividad de Sociedad linneana de Londres, Haworth se convierte en miembro en 1798. En botánica, se especializa sobre las plantas de bulbos y el género Mesembryanthemum. Fue un gran coleccionista de plantas suculentas.

Funda una efímera sociedad entomológica, la Aurelian Society en 1812. Publicó numerosas obras sobre la sistemática de las mariposas británicas. En 1802, Prodromus Lepidopterorum Britannicorum. En 1803, comenzó a publicar Lepidoptera Britannica. Siguió la sistemática de clasificación que había puesto en vigor Carlos Linneo (1707-1778) y por Johan Christian Fabricius (1745-1808). Su trabajo no sería sobrepasado hasta 1857 por el Manual of British Butterflies and Moths de Henry Tibbats Stainton (1822-1892).

Especies

Sus especies se conservan actualmente en la colección Hope de Oxford. Su herbario, conteniendo 20.000 especímenes está también actualmente en Oxford. Su rica biblioteca se vendió también en subastas y se dispersó.
