Síntesis biográfica

Nació el 17 de diciembre de 1835 en la ciudad de Neuchâtel, Suiza.

Trayectoria laboral

Emigró en 1849 a los Estados Unidos, donde coordinó un significativo trabajo zoológico sobre equinodermos, como las estrellas de mar. También fue fundador y presidente del Radcliffe College. Se graduó en Harvard en 1855 y dos años mas tarde en Lawrence Scientific School.

Compró 10 acres de terreno al este de la entrada de la bahía Narraget y construyó un laboratorio en el primer piso en 1875. Hacia 1878 un chalet estilo laboratorio es construido en la parte este de la casa, cerca de la entrada. Tomó también 10 de sus estudiantes de Harvard y los trajo consigo a Newport para estudiar entre otras especies marinas las estrellas de mar y las medusas.

Desarrolló y supervisó lo que se volvería la mina de cobre más prominente del mundo, ubicada en Calumet, Michigan; mientras mejoraba las condiciones de trabajo para los mineros.

Se dedicó también al estudio de los arrecifes de coral. Las observaciones que hizo sobre un viaje de 1875 a la costa oeste de Sudamérica, le indujeron a poner en duda la teoría de Charles Darwin relativa a la formación de los arrecifes de coral.

Muerte

Falleció a bordo del SS Adriatic el 27 de marzo de 1910 mientras navegaba por el Océano Atlántico.
