Robert Elmer Balaban más conocido como "Bob Balaban" nació el 16 de agosto de 1945 en Chicago, Illinois, Estados Unidos.
Carrera
Su carrera tiene más de 30 años. Ha hecho a través de su compañía Chicagofilms las carreras de director cinematográfico y productor. Hizo varios papeles en el cine pero el inicial fue en Midnight Cowboy. Aún asistiendo a la Universidad de Nueva York desarrolló el papel de Linus en You are a Good man, Charlie Brown.
Alcanzó una nominación en 1979 al Premio Tony por su actuación en The Government Inspector. Trabajó en películas como 2010 y dirigió protagonizada por Randy Quaid la película Parents.
Interpretó además papeles secundarios en Absence of Malice, Bob Roberts, Deconstructing Harry, Ghost World, The Majestic, Lady in the Water y en todas las películas de Christopher Guest: Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show, A Mighty Wind y For Your Consideration. Participó en la cuarta temporada de Seinfeld, protagonizando a Russell Dalrymple, un presidente ficticio de la NBC y posteriormente amante de Elaine Benes. Fue invitado en la serie Friends interpretando a Frank Buffay, el padre de Phoebe, en el capítulo "The One With Joey's Bag".
Ha dirigido para la HBO OZ, para la NBC Amazing stories,Deadline,lateline y para la CBS Now and Again entre otros y produjó de Robert Altman el filme Gosford Park, alcanzando una nominación como Mejor película al Óscar.
Vida personal
Es de descendencia judía. Bob es hijo de Elmer Balaban y Eleanor Pottasch.Cursó estudios en las Universidad Colgate y Universidad de Nueva York. Vivió un tiempo junto a su familia en el Upper West Side de Manhattan.
Su padre es uno de los llamados pioneros de la televisión por cable y dueño de varios cines. Su familia tuvo una gran influencia en el mundo de la pantalla grande tanto que sus sus tíos constituyeron el circuito de teatros en Chicago Balaban y Katz dirigiendo así algunos de los más importantes cines a comienzo de 1920 en Estados Unidos. Su padre y su tío Harry fundaron la Corporación H & E Balaban en Chicagoy posteriormente obtuvieron estaciones de cable y televisión. Otro tío suyo llamado Barney Balaban fue presidente de Paramount Pictures por un período de 30 años.Además Sam Katz, el segundo marido de su abuela desde 1936 fue vice presidente de la Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer , presidente del cine Publix(una división de Paramount Pictures) y formó Balaban and Katz junto a algunos de los tíos de Bob.
