Lin Carter, cuyo nombre completo era Linwood Vrooman Carter, fue un notable escritor de novelas y relatos dedicados al terror, la ciencia ficción y la fantasía e intelectual estadounidense.

Síntesis biográfica

Lin Carter nació en San Petersburgo, Florida, el 9 de junio de 1930. Fue un ávido lector de ciencia ficción y fantasía en su juventud adquiriendo amplios conocimientos en este campo. Carter sirvió en el Ejército de los Estados Unidos (Infantería, Corea, 1951-53), después de lo cual asistió a la Universidad de Columbia (1953-54), tiempo durante el cual asistió al Taller de Poesía de Leonie Adams. Fue redactor años antes de comenzar a escribir a tiempo completo. Contrajo matrimonio en dos ocasiones, primero con Judith Ellen Hershkovitz (se casó en 1959 y se divorció en 1960) y luego con su compañera de trabajo Noel Vreeland (se casó en 1963 y se divorció en 1975). Fue redactor de publicidad, editor y, desde 1969, escritor independiente y consultor editorial. Durante gran parte de su carrera como escritor estuvo viviendo en Hollis, Nueva York. Fue miembro del club de banquetes literarios para hombres, Trap Door Spiders, que sirvió de base al grupo ficticio de Isaac Asimov para resolver misterios, los Black Widowers. Carter mismo fue el modelo para el personaje de Mario Gonzalo. También fue miembro del Swordsmen and Sorcerers' Guild of America (SAGA), un grupo de autores de fantasía heroica fundado en la década de 1960 cuyo trabajo fue antologizado en la saga Flashing Swords! En 1985, su calidad de vida se vio perjudicada por el desarrollo de un cáncer de boca que le forzó a someterse a una cirugía muy intensa para extirparlo. Fue su condición de veterano de la Guerra de Corea lo que le permitió acceder al tratamiento, que no logró curar su enfermedad y lo dejó desfigurado. Producto de dicho cáncer falleció el 7 de febrero de 1988 en Montclair, Nueva Jersey.

Trayectoria

Lin Carter comenzó su carrera como escritor de relatos de corte dunsaniano y debutó como novelista con El brujo de Lemuria, obra en la que apareció por primera vez Thongor de Lemuria, uno de sus personajes más célebres, y que sería la primera de una saga de cinco volúmenes. Tras eso y en colaboración con L. Sprage de Camps se dedicó a completar las sagas de Conan de Cimmeria y Kull de Atlantis, que habían quedado huérfanas con la prematura muerte de [[Robert E. Howard, su autor. Las novelas con personajes originales de Lin Carter fueron abundantes y se recogen en varios ciclos: el ya mencionado ciclo de Thongor (5 volumenes), Callisto (8), El Imperio Verde (3), La Estrella Verde (5), Kylix (3), Terra Magica (4) El Fin del Mundo (6) y Zanthodon (5), a los cuales hay que sumar otras 17 novelas e innumerables relatos. Además escribió ensayos sobre Tolkien y los Mitos de Cthulhu. Además de las ya mencionadas aportaciones a los ciclos de Conan y Kull, especialmente relevante fue su elaboración de las Leyendas de Xoth, un conjunto de relatos en los que se trata de ampliar el contexto mubiano que Lovecraft y Hazel Heald habían desarrollado en el relato Más allá de los eones, contexto al cual Carter añade nuevos dioses y personajes. Además creó historias independientes para dar trasfondo a divinidades que hasta el momento solo habían aparecido a modo de menciones esporádicas, como es el caso de Zvilpogghua, retoño de Tsathoggua, y Nyog'Sothep, el Magnum Innominandum de Lovecraft. Como dioses totalmente originales de Lin Carter hay que mencionar a Aphoom-Zhah, El Gusano que Roe en la Noche, Ythogtha y Zoth-Ommog.
